NTX Members Schooled on Advanced Wall Coatings

At NTX’s September meeting, members were provided with an in-depth presentation on exterior wall coatings by one of their own, Patrick Jorski from Sika USA. With 37 years’ experience, and countless demonstrations, Patrick discussed the differences between “paint” and “coatings”, highlighting the 3 types:

• Thin mil – 4-5 dry film thickness (DFT), typically used for aesthetics purposes
• High Build – 12-20 DFT, typically used for protection, and
• Elastomeric – 12-20 DFT typically used for waterproofing

Patrick enumerated the characteristics to consider when selecting an exterior wall coating for new or repair installations, including:

• Elongation – ability to stretch AND recover when applied properly
• Flexibility – tested per ASTM D522 over a 1-inch mandrel
• Anti-Carbonation – ability to resist atmospheric CO2 and moisture
• Breathability – ability to allow moisture vapor to escape
• Texture – need to hide repairs and/or match an existing coating

Repair fundamentals were discussed, including defining the problem, identifying the type of wall, movement potential, cracks (typically dynamic), and proper surface preparation. Limitations listed on material product data sheets provide important information regarding maximum moisture content of the substrate, acceptable application temperature ranges and recoat windows.

As he does in many of his training classes, Patrick provided tips and tricks for achieving the best possible end result. He demonstrated the right method of “boxing” the material to achieve consistent color, conditioning the roller covers, cutting in edges and providing a stipple texture if needed, and the best way to roller-apply the coating to avoid streaks and an uneven appearance.
